We would like to congratulate Sujatha Thaladi of MENFA for being nominated for the "Recognising Achievement Award "

In the words of the Welsh Assembly Government’s First Minister, the Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan, “Since devolution there has been a growing desire for the creation of an awards system that would allow Wales to recognise and celebrate achievement and the tremendous contribution ordinary people make to our society. The Welsh government has launched a new and long term award scheme called ‘Recognising Achievement’ this year to recognise individuals’ contributions in certain specified activities or fields. Every year there will be a specific theme underpinning the process used to identify worthy individuals.  The theme for 2009 is ‘Helping People in Difficult Situations’

I was invited to accept an award from the First Minster for my work with the community in Butetown and was able to speak to him about MENFA and the work it does in the community.  I also had the opportunity to talk at some length to Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills and Dr Brian Gibbons, Social Justice and Local Authority Minister.

On a sunny and successful afternoon at Caerphilly Castle, the Great Hall was also host to 36 other recipients of an award, including 16 current MBEs and one OBE.

Welcome to SWITCH Cymru's new site

Learning
Switch can help you with learning all sorts of new things; whether for fun, to keep up with the children, do more to help your community or to help your job prospects. What is different about SWITCH is that you can do so at a local community centre run by local volunteers who will give you support and help. There are all sorts of courses and materials that you can look at available over the internet and we'll also be running short courses at your local centre. If you're not used to computers we will help you. We can help with reading, writing, number skills and learning to use computers plus a whole lot more.

Employment and Training
In time Switch intends to help people improve their job prospects whether or not you are currently in work. The learning option can help you to gain new skills and some of the internet links available will give advice on what skills you need for a particular job. There is also information on job vacancies "on-line". In time we want to develop a much better service at local centres giving advice on training and job opportunities. Help us to develop this.

Advice and guidance
Some of the centres involved in Switch already offer an excellent range of advice services to their communities. In time we want to extend this to all of the centres, so they will all be able to offer advice on benefits, legal issues, housing, immigration, dealing with bodies like the Council, Health service, gas, electricity etc.

Volunteering and more active communities
One of our intentions is to help communities help themselves. We want people to become more active, to volunteer to help out with making them better places to live. We will need volunteers with all sorts of skills but the most important things are to have a genuine interest and energy. We can provide the training and support to help you get new skills. Being a volunteer could even help with job prospects. Interested?

Health
For almost all the communities involved in Switch, health matters are a big issue. In the long term Switch would like to do things to improve people's health.
