Conferences of interest – June and July
Terry went to 2 conferences that will be of interest to SWITCH members.
· One in Manchester, as guest of the WDA, is the first of its kind looking at how ICT can help in regeneration projects. Organised by the National Computing Centre it brought together examples of projects all around the UK. There were a few examples of where local groups had set up community businesses to provide IT and broadband in some very deprived housing estates in the North West and a good example of community television in East London amongst all sorts of ideas.
·
Access to Broadband Campaign in London on 9th July. Examples
from all round the UK where local people have taken matters into their own hands
and set up organisations to bring broadband and community IT projects to life.
Some had whole villages linked up often using wireless as the favoured medium
rather than dig up roads. A report of the day with video footage will be available
on the ARWAIN website soon –www.arwain.net.
