The Yemeni
Community Association in Cardiff was established to serve the
needs of members of the Yemeni community. The Yemeni community
is one of the oldest ethnic groups in Wales and during the 1920s
the Yemeni community accounted for half of the ethnic population
in Cardiff with around 1500 members, mainly sea-men.
Despite
this long history the Yemeni Community is one of the main disadvantaged
communities in Cardiff. Butetown, Grangetown and Riverside hosts
most of the Yemeni community members, with Butetown being the
heart of the Yemeni community. Butetown has been identified
as one of the most disadvantaged areas in Cardiff.
Developing
the community is one of the main aims of the Yemeni Community
Association. We would like to develop the community through
the Yemeni Community Centre. Elderly members, youth, women and
children should be able to benefit from the Centre which is
located in the heart of the Community, but without the necessary
facilities it will be very difficult.
We believe
the Yemeni Community Association will be able to serve the need
of the community by developing its centre and developing activities
that enable women, men, youth and children to benefit from new
facilities in the Yemeni Centre. Currently, we have children
from all areas of Cardiff attending the Yemeni School on Saturdays
and Sundays.
