SWITCH into Learning

Switch can help you with learning all sorts of new things; whether for fun, to keep up with the children, do more to help your community or to help your job prospects. What is different about SWITCH is that you can do so at a local community centre run by local volunteers who will give you support and help. There are all sorts of courses and materials that you can look at available over the internet and we'll also be running short courses at your local centre. If you're not used to computers we will help you. We can help with reading, writing, number skills and learning to use computers plus a whole lot more.

Learndirect and the SWITCH Project

Do you want to up-date your skills or learn new ones?
Do you find it difficult to attend classes?
Do you want to learn in a way that fits in with the rest of your life?

If you've answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then learndirect may be what you're looking for!

Learndirect is a new way of learning. Most of the courses are studied via the Internet, although there are some that use video, CD ROM and workbooks.

This means you can study at times and places to suit you - at home, at work, or at your friendly, local learndirect centre. All the centres in the SWITCH project are offering learndirect.

The courses are modular, and divided into bite-sized chunks of learning, so if you've only got an hour or so a week to spare, you can still learn.

You study at your own pace, and you can repeat bits as many times as you like, until you're happy you really understand them.

There are hundreds of courses to choose from, ranging from IT, Business & Management and Skills for Life (reading, writing and working with numbers). Some courses are free, and there are lots that are very reasonably priced.

So ask at your centre to have a look at what's on offer. Your centre has catalogues, or you can visit the learndirect website:

"Switch is working in close partnership with Cardiff ITEC, one of the largest third sector learning providers in South Wales. They are already providing free short training courses at key Switch centres - the Somali and MEWN Cymru - with more being developed at BAWSO, the Yemeni, the Sikh and the Bangladeshi women's.We are also working to develop joint initiatives to extend the scope of Switch's provision. Ways are being explored of developing the training and tutoring skills needed from within our member communities"
